Yordan Ruben Alvarez, born on June 27, 1997, is a Cuban professional baseball player who serves as a designated hitter and left fielder for the Houston Astros in Major League Baseball. Yordan Alvarez began his Major League Baseball career in 2019 as a member of the Houston Astros. Before his American career, Alvarez competed in the Cuban National Series for Las Tunas over two seasons. Houston secured him via trade in 2016, prior to his professional debut in the minor leagues. In 2019, he earned unanimous American League Rookie of the Year honors following a record-setting slugging percentage of .655. Alvarez began his professional journey in 2017, starting with the Quad Cities River Bandits and later advancing to the Buies Creek Astros. He was recognized as one of the top minor league prospects heading into the 2018 season.
