Walter Payton Biography

Walter Payton was a Pro Football Hall of Fame running back whose combination of power, balance, endurance, and versatility made him a Chicago Bears icon. Chicago selected Payton fourth overall in the 1975 NFL Draft after his standout career at Jackson State, and he spent all 13 of his NFL seasons with the Bears. At retirement, he held league records for 16,726 rushing yards, 3,838 carries, 110 rushing touchdowns, and 21,264 yards from scrimmage. Payton earned nine Pro Bowl selections, seven All-Pro honors, and the NFL Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year awards in 1977. In the 1985 season, he helped Chicago finish 15–1 and win Super Bowl XX. Nicknamed “Sweetness,” he also contributed as a receiver, blocker, and occasional passer, making him one of the game’s most complete running backs. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993, and his career remains central to the history of the Bears and the NFL.
