Tom Rathman Biography

Thomas Dean Rathman, born October 7, 1962, played as a fullback in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Raiders. He played college football at the University of Nebraska, where he earned three letters in football. After winning two Super Bowls during his playing career, Rathman became a coach and served as the 49ers' running backs coach from 1995 through 2016. Rathman was a three-year letter winner in football at Nebraska, contributing consistently to the team's success. He holds several Nebraska school records as a fullback, including 881 rushing yards in a single season during 1985. The 49ers selected Rathman in the third round of the 1986 NFL draft with the 56th overall pick. In 2003, he joined the Detroit Lions as running backs coach under head coach Steve Mariucci, serving through Mariucci's tenure.
