Thomas Hearns Biography

Thomas Hearns, known as the Motor City Cobra and the Hitman, won world titles across five weight classes while gaining 23 kg in weight during his career. Hearns was named Fighter of the Year by The Ring magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America in 1980 and again in 1984, the latter following his knockout victory over Roberto Durán. Known for his powerful punching ability, Hearns maintained his effectiveness as a devastating puncher even after moving up five weight classes. He compiled an amateur record of 155 wins and 8 losses before turning professional. Hearns began his professional boxing career in Detroit, Michigan, in 1977 under the guidance of trainer Emanuel Steward. In 1980, he entered a world title fight with a perfect 28–0 record against Mexico’s Cuevas. In 1981, Hearns, with a 32–0 record and 30 knockouts, challenged WBC Champion Sugar Ray Leonard, who had a 30–1 record, in a bout to unify the world welterweight championship.
