Steve Yzerman Biography

Steve Yzerman, born on May 9, 1965, played his entire 22-year NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings. He is a Detroit sports icon and a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Yzerman will transition into an advisory role with Detroit ahead of the 2026–27 NHL season. At age 21, he was named captain prior to the 1986–87 season and served as captain for over 1,300 games. Yzerman led the Red Wings to three Stanley Cup championships in 1997, 1998, and 2002. He served as general manager of Team Canada during the 2007 IIHF World Championship. Yzerman was appointed executive director of Team Canada on October 7, 2008, for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
