Steve Garvey began his major league career with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1969 after a collegiate baseball stint at Michigan State University. He earned the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1974 and was named National League Championship Series MVP in 1978. Garvey signed with the San Diego Padres in December 1982 and played for the team until his career concluded in 1987. In 1984, he was named National League Championship Series MVP after hitting a walk-off home run to win Game Four for the Padres. He was selected as a National League All-Star for ten seasons, with nine of those as a starting first baseman, a record for his position. At Michigan State University, Garvey recorded 30 tackles and earned a letter as a defensive back in 1967. Garvey was honored as Michigan State Baseball Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in 2009, inducted into the Michigan State University Hall of Fame in 2010, and had his jersey number 10 retired by the university in 2014.
