Sidney Crosby Biography

Sidney Patrick Crosby, born on August 7, 1987, is a Canadian professional ice hockey player who has served as a centre and captain for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League. Selected first overall in the 2005 NHL entry draft, he earned the nickname Sid the Kid and was hailed as The Next One. Crosby's jersey number 87 was retired by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Océanic team in 2019, and the league established the Sidney Crosby Trophy for Rookie of the Year in 2025. He made his NHL debut during the 2005–06 season, recording 102 points and finishing as runner-up for the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL Rookie of the Year. Crosby led the Pittsburgh Penguins to Stanley Cup victories in 2016 and 2017, becoming the third player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy in consecutive years. In 2011, he sustained a concussion that kept him out for the remainder of the season and most of the 2011–12 campaign. He won his second Ted Lindsay Award in 2013 and was a finalist for the Hart Memorial Trophy that same season.
