Shawon Donnell Dunston, born on March 21, 1963, is an American former professional baseball player. Dunston played in Major League Baseball from 1985 through 2002 as a shortstop. He was named an All-Star in 1988 and again in 1990. In his senior year at Thomas Jefferson High School, he posted a .790 batting average, hit 10 home runs, and stole 37 bases in 26 games. The Chicago Cubs selected Dunston first overall in the draft after his high school career. After becoming a free agent following the 1991 season, he signed a four-year contract worth $12 million to stay with the Cubs. The Cubs did not protect him from the 1992 expansion draft, but neither the Colorado Rockies nor the Florida Marlins chose him.
