Serena Jameka Williams, born on September 26, 1981, is an American professional tennis player who has competed at the highest level of the sport. She has been ranked world No. 1 in women's singles by the WTA for 319 weeks, the third-longest tenure in history, and finished as year-end No. 1 on five occasions. Williams has won 73 WTA Tour-level singles titles and captured 23 major women's singles championships, the most in the Open Era. She turned professional in 1995 and claimed her first major singles title at the 1999 US Open. Beginning with the 2012 Wimbledon Championships, she returned to dominance, winning Olympic gold and capturing eight of thirteen singles majors, including all four in a row from 2014 to 2015. After taking a break from professional tennis following pregnancy, she returned to competition and reached four major finals. She also won two mixed doubles majors, both in 1998.
