Samuel Richard Darnold, born on June 5, 1997, is an American professional football quarterback who has played in the National Football League. He played college football for the USC Trojans, where he became the first freshman to win the Archie Griffin Award. Darnold was selected third overall in the 2018 NFL draft by the New York Jets, beginning his professional career with the team. In 2024, he led the Minnesota Vikings to the playoffs and earned Pro Bowl honors. Sam Darnold transitioned from being labeled a draft bust to becoming a starting quarterback who won a Super Bowl while playing for the Vikings. During high school, Darnold excelled in basketball, earning South Coast League Most Valuable Player honors twice. His basketball background contributed to his football abilities, as he demonstrated the ability to secure a defensive rebound and launch a 70-foot pass with precision.
