Roger Staubach Biography

Roger Staubach, born February 5, 1942, played 11 seasons in the NFL as a professional football quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. He won the 1963 Heisman Trophy while playing college football for the Navy Midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy. Staubach joined the Dallas Cowboys in 1969, succeeding Don Meredith as the team's primary quarterback after Meredith's 1968 retirement. He earned Super Bowl VI MVP honors, becoming the first player to win both the Heisman Trophy and Super Bowl MVP. Staubach is one of ten players to win the Heisman Trophy and be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and he is the only quarterback to achieve both. Before his naval career, he set a school record for passing yards and scored 18 touchdowns during a year at New Mexico Military Institute. A week after his debut, coach Wayne Hardin substituted Staubach into a game against Cornell University to assess his impact on the offense.
