Rodney Cline Carew was born on October 1, 1945, and is a Panamanian-American former professional baseball player and coach. Carew played in Major League Baseball from 1967 to 1985 as a second baseman, first baseman, and designated hitter for the Minnesota Twins and the California Angels. He appeared in 18 consecutive All-Star Games and led the American League in hits three times, including 239 in 1977, a total ranked 12th in a season at the time and tied for 16th as of 2024. Carew won seven American League batting titles, second most in history behind Ty Cobb, and the AL batting title was renamed in his honor on July 12, 2016. In 1977, Carew was awarded the Roberto Clemente Award for his contributions to local community affairs. After retiring as a player, Carew served as a coach for the California Angels and the Milwaukee Brewers. A tryout arranged by scout Herb Stein in April 1964 led to Carew’s professional baseball career after he impressed during the evaluation.
