Albert Fred Red Schoendienst was an American professional baseball player and manager who lived from 1923 to 2018. Schoendienst played in Major League Baseball for 19 seasons from 1945 to 1963, appearing in 10 All-Star Games. He managed the St. Louis Cardinals from 1965 to 1976, marking the second-longest tenure in team history. Schoendienst began his professional career in the Georgia–Florida League with the Albany Cardinals and later played for the Union City Greyhounds. He was initially assigned to left field due to Marty Marion’s presence at shortstop, a role Marion had held after winning the NL MVP in 1944. In 1946, the Cardinals moved Schoendienst to second base as they pursued their third World Series title in five years.
