Randy Johnson Biography

Randy Johnson, born September 10, 1963, played 22 seasons in Major League Baseball from 1988 to 2009 for six teams, primarily the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks. Randy Johnson stood 6 feet 10 inches tall, measuring 2.08 metres, making him the tallest player in MLB history upon entering the league. Johnson led his league in strikeouts nine times and in earned run average, winning percentage, and complete games four times each during his career. In the 2001 World Series, Johnson won three games and was named Most Valuable Player as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the New York Yankees. Johnson recorded 303 career victories, the fifth-most by a left-handed pitcher in MLB history, and amassed 4,875 strikeouts, second all time and first among left-handers. He earned 10 All-Star selections, won the Cy Young Award five times, and is one of only two pitchers to win the award in four consecutive seasons from 1999 to 2002. Johnson maintained effectiveness into his 40s, with his signature fastball-slider combination proving durable over a long and successful career.
