Paul Hornung Biography

Paul Hornung played on teams that won four NFL titles and the first Super Bowl. Packers coach Vince Lombardi stated that Hornung was the greatest player I ever coached. After spending his sophomore season of 1954 as a backup fullback, Hornung blossomed as a halfback and safety during his junior year in 1955. In a loss to Southern California, Hornung ran and threw for 354 yards, the best in the nation in 1955. Hornung received the Heisman Trophy in 1956 despite Notre Dame's 2–8 season record, a distinction not previously awarded to a player on a losing team. After graduating from Notre Dame with a degree in business, Hornung was the first selection overall in the 1957 NFL draft. LaDainian Tomlinson surpassed Paul Hornung's record in 2006 by scoring 180 points, including his 30th touchdown on December 17, during his 14th game.
