Patrick Roy, born October 5, 1965, is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach, executive, and former player who most recently served as head coach for the New York Islanders in the NHL. Roy was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in history in 2017 and was hailed in sports media as 'king of goaltenders'. He won the Stanley Cup four times during his career, two with each franchise he played for. After retiring, Roy served as head coach for the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL and later for the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL. He then served as head coach of the Islanders from January 2024 until April 2026. Roy was drafted in the third round as the 51st overall pick in the 1984 NHL entry draft by the Montreal Canadiens, despite being a fan of the rival Quebec Nordiques. He was nicknamed St. Patrick after a victory and continued playing for the Canadiens, who won the Adams Division in 1987–88 and 1988–89, losing to the Calgary Flames in the Stanley Cup Final.
