Night Train Lane Biography

Richard Lane, known as Dick Night Train Lane, played 14 seasons in the NFL as a professional football cornerback. He played for the Los Angeles Rams from 1952 to 1953, the Chicago Cardinals from 1954 to 1959, and the Detroit Lions from 1960 to 1965. As a rookie in 1952, Lane recorded 14 interceptions, a feat that remains an NFL record over 70 years later. He earned seven Pro Bowl selections and was named first-team All-Pro seven times between 1956 and 1963. Lane was honored on the NFL 50th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1969, the 75th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1994, and the 100th Anniversary All-Time Team in 2019. Night Train Lane was listed as the twentieth greatest football player by The Sporting News among their 100 Greatest Football Players in 1999. After retiring, Lane served in administrative roles with the Detroit Lions from 1966 to 1972 and held assistant coaching positions at Southern University in 1972 and Central State University in 1973.
