Mo Vaughn Biography

Maurice Samuel Vaughn, born December 15, 1967, played as a first baseman in Major League Baseball from 1991 to 2003 for the Boston Red Sox, Anaheim Angels, and New York Mets. He earned the American League MVP award in 1995 while playing for the Boston Red Sox. Vaughn played college baseball at Seton Hall University under head coach Mike Sheppard. He was awarded the Jack Kaiser Award as MVP of the 1987 Big East Conference baseball tournament during his time at Seton Hall. His brothers in Omega Psi Phi gave him the nickname Hit Dog, and he hit 29 home runs with 101 RBIs in 1993 with the Red Sox. In 1996, Vaughn played in 161 games, posted a .326 batting average, and recorded a career-high 44 home runs, 143 RBIs, 207 hits, and 118 runs scored. On April 15, 1997, he was among several players permitted to continue wearing number 42 after MLB retired the number to honor Jackie Robinson.
