Mike Torrez Biography

Michael Augustine Torrez, born on August 28, 1946, is an American former Major League Baseball starting pitcher. Torrez played in 18 seasons, pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1967 to 1971, the Montreal Expos from 1971 to 1974, and the Baltimore Orioles in 1975. He won two games in the 1977 World Series as a member of the New York Yankees. Torrez made his MLB debut in 1967 and became a full-time major leaguer in 1969, winning nine of his final 10 starts that year. In 1969, he posted a 10–4 record, but had an 8–10 record in 1970 before being traded to the Expos during the 1971 season. Following the World Series, Mike Torrez joined the Boston Red Sox on a seven-year agreement worth $2.5 million and contributed to their pursuit of the American League East championship throughout the season. Boston and New York finished the season with identical records, and Torrez pitched the tie-breaker game to determine the winner.
