Mike Schmidt Biography

Michael Jack Schmidt, born on September 27, 1949, played his entire 18-year MLB career with the Philadelphia Phillies from 1972 to 1989. He earned 12 All-Star selections and won three National League MVP awards, excelling in both power hitting and defensive play. Schmidt captured ten National League Gold Glove Awards as a third baseman, highlighting his elite fielding ability. At Ohio University, he led the Bobcats to the 1970 College World Series and was named to the 1970 All-America Team. The Phillies selected him in the second round of the 1971 draft, 30th overall, marking the start of his professional journey. He spent the remainder of the 1971 season in Reading, advancing through the minor league system. In 1973, despite a .196 batting average and 136 strikeouts, he hit 18 home runs, signaling his power potential.
