Mike Richter Biography

Mike Richter, born on September 22, 1966, played as a professional ice hockey goaltender in the National Hockey League. He played all 14 seasons of his career with the New York Rangers. Mike Richter competed in college hockey with Wisconsin for two seasons prior to his selection by the Rangers in 1985. He made his debut with one start in the 1989 Stanley Cup playoffs and joined a rotation with John Vanbiesbrouck, which lasted three years before he became the primary netminder following a trade in 1993. A series of concussions ultimately saw Richter retire prior to the 2003–04 season. During the following two seasons, Richter shared goaltending responsibilities with veteran John Vanbiesbrouck and earned a spot on the U.S. team for the 1991 Canada Cup. On January 31 of the 1990–91 season, Richter made 59 saves, including 26 in the third period, to tie the Rangers' single-game record against the Vancouver Canucks.
