Michael James Haynes, born on July 1, 1953, was an American professional football player who played as a cornerback in the National Football League for the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Raiders. Haynes was recognized as one of the greatest cornerbacks in NFL history, known for his speed, physicality, quickness, and range as both a defensive back and punt returner. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1997 and into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000. Haynes was named to the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1994 and later selected for the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team in 2019. He was voted NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1976 and earned nine Pro Bowl selections, two first-team All-Pro honors, and five consecutive second-team All-Pro nods from 1976 to 1980. Haynes also competed in track and field and holds the long jump record at John Marshall High School. During his college career, he recorded 17 interceptions, including a national-leading 11 in his junior year of 1974.
