Michael Jerome Irvin was born on March 5, 1966, and is an American sports commentator and former professional football player. He played as a wide receiver for 12 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys in the National Football League. Irvin played college football for the Miami Hurricanes and was selected in the first round of the 1988 NFL draft by the Cowboys. Irvin earned the nickname Playmaker for making big plays in important college and professional football games. While at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Irvin received strong recruitment attention from the University of Miami to join the Miami Hurricanes football program. At the University of Miami under coach Jimmy Johnson, Irvin recorded 143 career receptions, 2,423 receiving yards, and 26 touchdown receptions. Irvin was named an All-American three times by the Newspaper Enterprise Association, receiving second-team honors as a freshman, first-team as a sophomore, and second-team again as a junior.
