Mia Hamm, born on March 17, 1972, played as a forward and midfielder for the United States national team from 1987 to 2004. She won the FIFA Women's World Cup in 1991 and again in 1999. Hamm earned Olympic gold medals in 1996 and 2004, and a silver in 2000. As of March 2026, she ranks third on the list of most international goals scored by any player, regardless of gender. The Women's Sports Foundation honored her as Sportswoman of the Year in 1997 and 1999. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1989 to 1993, contributing to four NCAA Division I Championships in five years. Hamm received All-American honors, was named ACC Player of the Year for three straight years, and earned ACC Female Athlete of the Year in 1993 and 1994.
