Martín Maldonado Biography

Martín Benjamín Maldonado, born on August 16, 1986, is a Puerto Rican former professional baseball catcher. He has played in Major League Baseball for 15 seasons. Maldonado was chosen by the Angels in the 27th round of the 2004 draft and later played in the MLB starting in 2011 with the Brewers. In 2017, he won a Gold Glove and a Fielding Bible Award. In October 2021, following a season in which he batted .172, he was described as arguably the worst hitter in baseball. In 2017, he played in a career-high 138 games, batting .221 with 14 home runs and 38 RBI. On April 21, 2021, he agreed to a one-year, $5 million contract extension with the Astros, including a $5 million vesting option for the 2023 season.
