Mark Rypien Biography

Mark Rypien, born October 2, 1962, played 14 seasons as a professional football quarterback in the NFL. He played college football for Washington State and was drafted by the Washington Redskins in 1986. After Jay Schroeder lost his starting role, Rypien became the second quarterback following a trade in 1987. In 1991, he threw for 3,564 yards and 28 touchdowns, leading the Redskins to a 14–2 record and Super Bowl XXVI. Rypien earned Pro Bowl honors in both 1989 and 1991. Under head coach Richie Petitbon, he had a strong 1993 training camp and gained momentum after a win over the Dallas Cowboys. He briefly owned a NASCAR team, selling the No. 97 car to Roush Racing in 1997 after it won the 2004 Nextel Cup championship.
