Marco Antonio Barrera Biography

Marco Antonio Barrera held world championships in three weight classes from 1995 to 2007, competing as a super bantamweight, featherweight, and super featherweight. After losing twice to Junior Jones, Barrera returned to compete in a trilogy against Erik Morales and defeated Naseem Hamed to claim the Ring magazine featherweight title. BoxRec ranks Barrera 55th among the greatest boxers of all time, pound for pound, while ESPN placed him 43rd on their list of the 50 greatest boxers of all time. As an amateur, Barrera compiled a record of 104 wins and 4 losses, winning five Mexican national championships. Before his first amateur loss, Barrera maintained an undefeated record of 56 wins and 0 losses. Barrera made his professional debut at age 15, defeating David Felix by knockout in the second round on November 22, 1989. He began 1992 by winning his first professional title, defeating Justino Suárez by decision in twelve rounds to claim the Mexican super flyweight championship.
