Major Harris Biography

Major C. Harris, born on February 6, 1968, played college football as a quarterback for the West Virginia Mountaineers during the 1980s. Harris earned first-team All-American honors in 1989 and finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1988 and third in 1989. He was honored with induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009. As a senior, Harris completed a game-winning 79-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the game against Indiana High School. He was named Pittsburgh's high school football player of the year by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette after his junior and senior seasons and was recognized as a Sporting News Top 100 prospect. Harris accepted a scholarship offer from West Virginia, where coach Don Nehlen was rebuilding the quarterback position. Nehlen organized a football camp featuring two-hand touch football and noted that no player could defend against Harris, leading to the signing of both Harris and Browning Nagle, who were redshirted for the season.
