Major Applewhite Biography

Major Lee Applewhite, born on July 26, 1978, is an American college football coach and former player. He has served as the head football coach for the University of South Alabama since 2024. Prior to his role at South Alabama, he was the head coach at the University of Houston from 2017 to 2018. He began his coaching career in 2003 and has held various positions at Texas, Syracuse, Rice, and Alabama. As a player, he played college football for the Texas Longhorns from 1998 to 2001 and earned All-Big 12 honors. Applewhite achieved an 8–2 record as a starter, including a 20–16 win over #7 Nebraska that ended their 47-game home winning streak and a 97-yard touchdown pass to Wane McGarity in a blowout against Oklahoma. In 1999, he started nearly every game, guiding Texas to a 9–4 record, a Big 12 South Championship, and a Cotton Bowl appearance.
