William Mack Brown, born on August 27, 1951, served as a college football coach in the United States. He served two separate tenures at the University of North Carolina, first from 1988 to 1997 and later from 2019 until his dismissal following the 2024 season. During his second stint in Chapel Hill, he surpassed Dick Crum to become the Tar Heels’ all-time winningest coach in program history. Brown is most recognized for leading the University of Texas Longhorns from 1998 to 2013, securing two Big 12 titles and a national championship in 2005. Before his roles at Texas and North Carolina, he held head coaching positions at Appalachian State in 1983 and Tulane from 1985 to 1987. He received the Paul "Bear" Bryant Award in 2006, honoring him as Coach of the Year. Brown reached his 200th career victory during the 2008 season, becoming the first Texas head coach to achieve that milestone.
