Lee Trevino Biography

Lee Trevino, born on December 1, 1939, is an American retired professional golfer widely regarded as one of the greatest players in golf history. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1981. Trevino won six major championships and 29 PGA Tour events during his professional career. In 1967, he earned $6,000 for finishing fifth, which granted him Tour privileges for the remainder of the season. Trevino captured the 1968 U.S. Open at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York, finishing four strokes ahead of runner-up Nicklaus. After holing his chip shot on the 17th hole during a 1974 tournament, he declared himself the greatest chipper in the world. At age 44 in 1984, he won his sixth and final major at the PGA Championship with a 15-under-par score of 273, becoming the first player to shoot all four rounds under 70.
