George Kenneth Griffey Sr. was born on April 10, 1950, and played as a professional baseball outfielder in Major League Baseball. He competed in MLB from 1973 to 1991, notably as a member of the Cincinnati Reds who won two World Series titles and three division championships between 1973 and 1976. Griffey recorded a batting average above .300 in five seasons while playing for the Cincinnati team known as the Big Red Machine during the mid-1970s. Though he left his hometown of Donora in 1972 to pursue his career, he maintained strong connections to the community. Griffey made his MLB debut with the Reds on August 25, 1973, recording two hits in four at-bats during a 6–4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1975, he posted a .305 batting average, hit four home runs, and drove in 46 runs across 132 games. In 2014, he released his memoir Big Red: Baseball, Fatherhood, and My Life in the Big Red Machine, detailing his upbringing, career with the Reds and Yankees, and personal relationships.
