Karl Nelson Biography

Karl Stuart Nelson, born on June 14, 1960, was an American former professional football player who played as an offensive tackle in the National Football League. Born in DeKalb, Illinois, he earned all-state honors in football, was a standout pitcher in baseball, and lettered in basketball during his high school career. As a junior, he was named second-team All-Big Eight by the Associated Press, and as a senior he was selected first-team All-Big Eight. Nelson was chosen 70th overall by the New York Giants in the third round of the 1983 NFL draft. Shortly after the Super Bowl, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease and missed the entire 1987 season. His illness recurred in 1989, leading to another season missed, though he contributed by coaching the team's offensive line. He retired on December 13, 1989, and was honored with the George Halas Award that same year for overcoming adversity.
