Julio César Chávez González, born on July 12, 1962, is a Mexican former professional boxer who competed from 1980 to 2005. He was ranked as the world's best boxer pound for pound by The Ring magazine from 1990 to 1993. Chávez held the Ring and lineal lightweight titles from 1988 to 1989 and the lineal light welterweight title twice between 1990 and 1996. He holds records for most world title defenses with 27, most title fight victories with 31, and most opponents beaten for a title with 30. His 1993 victory over Greg Haugen at the Estadio Azteca drew a record crowd of 132,274 for a championship boxing match. Chávez won his first world title, the vacant WBC Super Featherweight belt, on September 13, 1984, by defeating Mario Martínez at the Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles. On April 19, 1985, he defended his title by knocking out Ruben Castillo in the sixth round, a fighter with a record of 63–4–2.
