Juan Marichal, nicknamed the Dominican Dandy, played 16 seasons in Major League Baseball from 1960 to 1975, primarily with the San Francisco Giants. He won 18 games in 1962, helping the Giants reach the World Series, and recorded 191 victories during the 1960s, the most by any MLB pitcher. His 26 wins in 1968 remain the highest single-season total in San Francisco Giants history. Marichal was often overshadowed by contemporaries Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson, as he never won the Cy Young Award despite four top seasons. He pitched a no-hitter in June 1963 and defeated Warren Spahn 1–0 in 16 innings two weeks later, also recording three one-hitters and six two-hitters. He was selected for the All-Star Game in nine seasons, posted a 0.50 ERA in eight appearances, and was named Most Valuable Player in the 1965 contest. At age sixteen, Marichal began his career in 1954 playing for Las Flores in a summer league in Monte Cristi.
