José Altuve Biography

José Carlos Altuve, born on May 6, 1990, is a Venezuelan professional baseball player who plays second base for the Houston Astros in Major League Baseball. Since making his debut in 2011, Altuve has remained with the Houston Astros, becoming the team's longest-tenured current player and the only one to have played for them during their National League years. He has represented Venezuela in the 2017 and 2023 World Baseball Classics, competing on the international stage. Born in Maracay, Venezuela, Altuve was signed by the Astros as an amateur free agent in 2007 and made his major league debut in 2011. From 2014 to 2017, he recorded at least 200 hits each season, including 225 in 2014, which set an Astros record and led the American League in that category. After hitting a walk-off home run to win the 2019 American League Championship Series, Altuve earned his first ALCS MVP and later won the 2022 World Series with the Astros. Altuve holds the record for most All-Star selections among Astros with nine and has started at second base in the All-Star Game six times.
