Jonathan Bryan Toews, born April 29, 1988, is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. Jonathan Toews served as captain of the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL from 2008 to 2023, playing as a centre for the team and later the Winnipeg Jets. Toews was chosen by the Blackhawks as the third overall pick in the 2006 NHL entry draft. Jonathan Toews claimed the Stanley Cup in 2010 and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Toews earned gold medals with Canada's national teams at the 2005 World U-17 Hockey Challenge, the 2006 and 2007 World Junior Championships, the 2007 World Championships, the 2010 Winter Olympics, and the 2014 Winter Olympics. David Toews, like his brother Jonathan, enrolled at the University of North Dakota for the 2008–09 season after attending Shattuck-Saint Mary's. Toews opted to play midget AAA hockey at Shattuck-Saint Mary's in Faribault, Minnesota, for the 2003–04 and 2004–05 seasons despite being chosen first overall in the 2003 WHL Bantam draft by the Tri-City Americans.
