John Riggins Biography

Robert John Riggins, born August 4, 1949, played as a running back in the NFL for the New York Jets and Washington Redskins. He played college football for the Kansas Jayhawks, contributing to their success during his tenure. Riggins was known for his consistent performance and strong running style throughout his professional career. In 1983, he rushed for 24 touchdowns, setting a then-NFL record for a single season. During Super Bowl XVII, he rushed for 166 yards and scored a touchdown, earning him MVP honors. In 1968, Riggins helped lead the Jayhawks to victory in the Big Eight Conference championship. In his senior year of 1970, he recorded 1,131 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, a school record at the time.
