John McEnroe Biography

John Patrick McEnroe Jr. was born on February 16, 1959, and is an American former professional tennis player. McEnroe was ranked world No. 1 in men's singles by the ATP for 170 weeks. He was known for his shot-making and volleying skills, rivalries with Björn Borg and Jimmy Connors, and confrontational on-court behavior. McEnroe won a record 155 career titles, including 77 in singles, 77 in doubles, and 1 in mixed doubles. John McEnroe holds the distinction of being the sole male tennis player to secure over seventy victories in both singles and doubles. His singles match record of 82–3 in 1984 remains the best single-season win rate in the Open Era. McEnroe contributed to five Davis Cup titles for the U.S. and later served as team captain.
