John Cappelletti Biography

John Raymond Cappelletti, born August 9, 1952, was an American professional football player who played as a running back in the National Football League with the Los Angeles Rams and San Diego Chargers. He played college football for the Penn State Nittany Lions and won the Heisman Trophy in 1973. Cappelletti was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993. Coach Joe Paterno held Cappelletti in the highest regard, stating he was the best football player he ever coached. In 1974, Bonner presented Cappelletti with the Coach Jack Gottschalk Memorial Award. The John Cappelletti Award was created by Bonner's alumni association to recognize a senior demonstrating character, commitment, and athletic achievement. Cappelletti attended Pennsylvania State University, where he played football and earned national recognition.
