John Brodie Biography

John Brodie played quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL for 17 seasons after being born on August 14, 1935. He later competed professionally as a golfer on the Senior PGA Tour and served as a broadcaster for both football and golf. Brodie earned consensus All-American honors in football during his senior year at Stanford University in 1956. He won three NFL passing titles and led the league in passing touchdowns in a single season. Brodie's team secured three straight NFC West division titles but was eliminated in each subsequent playoff appearance. Brodie was selected to the Pro Bowl twice and retired ranked third in NFL history for career passing yards. He was chosen third overall in the 1957 NFL Draft and spent his rookie year on the bench behind starting quarterback Y A Tittle with the 49ers.
