Jim Lonborg Biography

James Reynold Lonborg, born on April 16, 1942, is an American former professional baseball right-handed starting pitcher who played in Major League Baseball with the Boston Red Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, and Philadelphia Phillies. He consistently threw pitches inside the strike zone during his fifteen-year professional baseball career. Lonborg attended Stanford University as a pre-med student on an academic scholarship, graduating in 1963. The Baltimore Orioles showed interest in Lonborg while he was in college, and he competed for amateur teams affiliated with the Orioles during that time. In his rookie year for Boston, Lonborg had a 9–17 win loss record and 4.47 earned run average. In the 1967 Red Sox' Impossible Dream season, Lonborg tied for the American League lead for pitchers in wins with 22 and games started with 39, and led the AL in strikeouts with 246. On October 31, 1972, Jim Lonborg was traded from the Brewers to the Phillies along with Ken Sanders and Earl Stephenson in exchange for Don Money, John Vukovich, and Bill Champion.
