Jay Buhner Biography

Jay Buhner, born August 13, 1964, is an American former professional baseball right fielder nicknamed Bone. He has played for the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners in Major League Baseball from 1987 to 2001. Jay Buhner grew up in Texas and played baseball at Clear Creek High School in League City, where he was coached by Jim Mallory. Buhner graduated from high school in 1982 and played college baseball at McLennan Community College in Waco. During his sophomore year in January 1984, Buhner was selected in the second round of the secondary phase of the free-agent draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 134 games with the Clippers, Buhner hit .279 with 31 home runs and 85 RBI. On July 21, 1988, the Yankees traded Buhner along with minor leaguers Rick Balabon and Troy Evers to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for designated hitter Ken Phelps.
