Gregory Lenard Lloyd Sr. was born on May 26, 1965, and played as a linebacker in the National Football League, primarily with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He earned five Pro Bowl selections and was named to three All-Pro teams during his NFL career. Lloyd played college football at Fort Valley State University, where he was a three-time All-SIAC selection and a three-time team Defensive MVP. He did not attend the NFL Scouting Combine but participated in the Heritage Bowl after college. The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Lloyd in the sixth round with the 150th overall pick in the 1987 NFL Draft. Lloyd was the 28th linebacker selected in the 1987 draft under Steelers coach Chuck Noll. An injury occurred on July 28, 1987, when Lloyd suffered a sprained left knee in training camp, which caused him to miss his entire rookie season and most of the 1988 season.
