Gordie Howe was born on March 31, 1928, and passed away on June 10, 2016, as a Canadian professional ice hockey player. Howe played in the NHL from 1946 to 1980, spanning 26 seasons, with 25 of them spent with the Detroit Red Wings. He was widely known as Mr. Hockey and regarded as one of the most complete players in ice hockey history. At retirement, his 801 goals, 1,049 assists, and 1,850 total points were NHL records that were later surpassed by Wayne Gretzky. Howe was selected as an NHL All-Star 23 times, tied with Chris Chelios for most seasons played, and held the NHL record for games played with 1,767 until 2021. In 2017, he was honored as one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in league history. When the Whalers joined the NHL in the 1979–80 season, Howe chose to play for the team in Hartford.
