Gary Sheffield Biography

Gary Antonian Sheffield, born November 18, 1968, was an American professional baseball outfielder who played in Major League Baseball from 1988 to 2009. Following his professional playing career, Gary Sheffield worked as a sports agent. He has played right field predominantly, with limited experience at left field, third base, shortstop, and first base. Sheffield was selected sixth overall in the 1986 amateur draft by the Brewers following a standout high school career at Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Florida. Sheffield finished his career with 1,475 walks, 1,636 runs, 1,676 RBIs, 2,689 hits, 509 home runs, and 135 hit by pitches. Sheffield recorded fewer than 80 strikeouts in 20 seasons and finished his 22-year career among the top 20 in walks. He held the record for most career doubles until it was surpassed in 2012 by Bradley Smith.
