John Gary Fencik, born on June 11, 1954, played 12 seasons in the NFL as a safety for the Chicago Bears. He earned first-team All-East honors during his college football career at Yale in 1975. Fencik was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the 10th round of the 1976 NFL draft but joined the Bears before the season began. He was a key member of the 1985 Chicago Bears team that won Super Bowl XX. Fencik holds the Chicago Bears franchise record for interceptions and set the team’s record for tackles at the time of his retirement. At Yale, he played wide receiver and recorded 86 receptions for 1,435 yards and 7 touchdowns between 1973 and 1975. In his senior year, he led the Ivy League with 729 receiving yards and caught 42 passes.
