Fred Dean Biography

Frederick Rudolph Dean, born on February 24, 1952, was an American professional football player who played as a defensive end in the NFL. He earned two first-team All-Pro selections and four Pro Bowl nods, winning two Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers. Dean played his college football for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs before entering the professional league. He was chosen by the San Diego Chargers in the second round of the 1975 NFL draft, selected 33rd overall. Chargers coach Tommy Prothro initially planned to use him as a linebacker but later allowed him to play as a lineman. Dean recorded nine sacks in 13 games and was named to the All-AFC team during his career. He missed the first two games of the season but still finished with 10½ sacks despite the absence.
