Fred Couples Biography

Frederick Steven Couples was born on October 3, 1959, and is an American professional golfer who has competed on the PGA Tour and the PGA Tour Champions. Couples has won 64 professional tournaments, including the Masters in 1992 and the Players Championship in 1984 and 1996. In August 2011, he won his first senior major at the Senior Players Championship and followed this with a victory at the Senior Open Championship in July 2012. He earned the nickname Boom Boom due to his long and accurate driving ability during the peak of his career. Couples has never taken a golf lesson or hired a swing coach, relying instead on self-taught techniques. In 1977, he accepted a golf scholarship to the University of Houston. As a 19-year-old amateur, he defeated PGA Tour veteran Don Bies in a playoff to win the 1978 Washington Open at Glendale Country Club in Bellevue.
