Evgeni Vladimirovich Malkin, born on 31 July 1986, is a Russian professional ice hockey player who has played as a centre and serves as an alternate captain for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League. Malkin began his career with his hometown club Metallurg Magnitogorsk, where he played for both the junior and senior teams. Selected second overall in the 2004 NHL entry draft, Malkin joined the Pittsburgh Penguins after an international transfer dispute delayed his NHL debut until 2006. After his first season with the Penguins, Malkin received the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's best rookie. The following season, he earned the Art Ross Trophy as the league's points leader and finished second in voting for the Hart Trophy. In 2012, Malkin won the Hart Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award, both awarded to the best player as voted by teammates, after claiming his second Art Ross Trophy with a 12-point lead—the largest margin since 1999. Internationally, Malkin has competed for Russia in two IIHF World U18 Championships and three World Junior Championships, winning one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal as a junior.
